” As with the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, people both inside and outside the physics community have voiced concern that the LHC might trigger one of several theoretical disasters capable of destroying the Earth or even the entire Universe…”
Yup, you read that right. On the way to work this morning I heard on NPR about this collider they’re building near Geneva, Switzerland called the LHC, or Large Hadron Collider. Needing the imagery, once I got to work I searched for it on Wikipedia and saw this little nugget o’ wisdom under (get this) “Safety Concerns”. A “safety concern” is something that might make you think twice before you try it without goggles. Not THE END OF THE UNIVERSE, or the cessation of EARTH, for that matter, pardon the pun. Why aren’t people commenting on this? I heard more about dolphins in my tuna than I’m hearing about this little hazard. The NPR story wasn’t even about the “safety concern”! It was about how they’re almost done with this thing. Not that we could soon be done in by this thing! The Swiss, at that! Is this for all those ‘neutral” jokes? So we go from watches to knives to autocidal contraptions? Where’s the sanity?
